See, today, almost everyone knows someone who says they are practicing Yoga. Many of these new yogis/yoginis are quite dedicated and go to class several times each week, but none of them truly understand what Yoga is let alone knowing teh danger that it could pose!

Let’s take a look at what most teachers are teaching: You attend a class that lasts for 60-90 minutes long doing various Yoga poses/stretches/asanas or whatever you want to call them. They vary from gentle to intense. The intensity will vary from class to class, style to style and teacher to teacher. And so, the student will say they are practicing Yoga regularly every week.

I do not wish to belittle anyone’s practice or imply that anyone is claiming to be or do something they are not. Yet, the fact remains that this is not Yoga. To claim that this type of activity represents learning Yoga is similar to someone learning the hand and finger exercises practiced by great pianists and thinking that they are learning to play and indeed, even are playing the piano.

This is not the fault of the student nor even the teacher sometimes as most of the teachers were taught wrongly by their own teachers! Imagine if most of the piano teachers only taught these exercises and called the practice - Piano Class. Why wouldn’t the student feel he/she was learning to play the piano? The same goes for Yoga When you suffer from arthritis you get used to living with chronic pain, and pain relief usually comes in the form of a pill, rather than gentle exercise. This causes you tremendous stress. I had been suffering from chronic pain for at least 3 years before I found Yoga!

Studies have shown that not only can yoga contribute to arthritis pain relief, but it helps to relieve your stress! It also helps to make you strong, flexible and confident, even though you have arthritis and feel depressed.

People with arthritis tend to cut down on their activities which leads to even more joint stiffening, and more pain. and hence more depressed which finally leads to commit suicide!

Undertaking some gentle yoga exercises not only improves your circulation and strengthens your bones and muscles, the exercises can also give you the confidence to live your life in spite of your arthritis. You don't need to bend yourself into a pretzel to do some yoga to help your arthritis. Breathing and self-awareness is at the core of yoga, so even standing up and breathing is a yoga exercise called Mountain Pose. This pose, just standing up and bringing your body into alignment as much as you can for a few moments, will help your posture, which translates into better balance in your daily activities.

Other yoga exercises are modified for people who have arthritis, with chairs, bolsters and other props. You still get most of the benefits of the full pose, and over time, you may even find that you no longer need the props. Go for both yoga classes and self-study. As Yoga is getting popular, and any exercise can be taught like Yoga. That is utterly rubbish! To be honest, if something looks and sounds like Yoga; it's probably "Yoga in disguise."

I do not want to take away any credit, but Yoga is a 5,000 year old health maintenance system. You could call Yoga the "mother" of all health maintenance systems. Many of today's health maintenance systems are "off shoots" of Yoga.
